Gorky, The Liver is the Cock's Comb

Upon inspection of The Liver is the Cock’s Comb by Gorky i found his stylistic approach and the way that its development mirrored his life very interesting. The liver in the cocks comb is a piece of art which bridges the gap between European Surrealist and Abstract expressionism. Gorsky came to this style though through a fairly long process. He was not innately put in this tight rope between the lines of the two styles, but instead he took a large portion of his life developing his style by first experiencing and going through the development of other artists that have come before him, such as picasso. Although Gorsky did go through training at one of the most acclaimed fine arts universities in the country, RISD, this process that he puts himself through in order to gain higher development by personally simulating the experiences of artists that came before him is a thorough, intense way of developing his style. There is an association in the acting world that equates the best of actors as the method actors who not only become their role on screen, but emulate them in all parts of their life. Gorky seems to be the painting world equivilent of this. Furthermore, The liver is the cock’s comb is the piece of Gorky’s that is most connected to his struggles and passion in his life. It reflects his own struggles, passion, and tumultuous life. Sadly, however, the story of Gorky does not end well. His trials in life all seemed to combust at the same time, causing him to commit suicide at the age of 44. Although his art is legendary, it does beg the question whether a life as fast and inconsistent as Gorky’s is worth it. And further, begs for us to look at the trials of the human condition as reflected in the art that these passionate, troubled minds experience.
