Prostitute before a Mirror
Georges Rouault's watercolor painting "Prostitute before a Mirror" seems
dark and depressing. The eyes of the woman are sunken and black which
makes me feel as if her soul is dead. Her reflection in the mirror is
distorted and seems to be different than her actual image. All of this
causes me to have a since of sadness and despair as if the colors and
style of the painting are reflecting the sadness and despair of a woman
caught in a life she doesn't want. Rouault
could have been effected by the novel by Stephen Crane called Maggie: A
girl of the streets written about 10 years prior to his painting, or by
Sister Carrie by Theodore Dreisser written in 1900. Both stories are
about the path a woman could take when she is
left with little opportunities, no support system and no money. The
reality is that many women during this time in history ended up exactly
where the "Prostitute before a Mirror" seems to have found herself.
