William Glackens Shoppers

William Glackens Shoppers
This art shows a development of a new form of leisure. This painting also shows the changing of gender roles, showing girls out, not just men. This access to discretionary income for woman was so different than before, woman are spending their husbands money, and now they are spending their own money. It shows the rise of independent woman. This gives me a feeling of independence even years later. The silent film, Ben Hur, was a 1907 15 minute long film. This was the same year as this painting. It doesn’t have many similarities but it was not made with the permission of the author Lew Wallace’s book that it was about. Their was a lawsuit that concluded that composers must get film rights on published work. This was a big rise in film and many actors would become famous in silent movies. This was a turning point in America, although these 2 medias do not directly correlate, they both show where America was going from here. Woman were beginning to provide for themselves and new industries were shooting up such as silent film also. Things were changing and they could all have influences on one another.
