James Ensor, Entry of Christ into Brussels

Expressionism is a form of art that is totally subjective. In other words, artists literally convey what they feel in their works. In the painting "Entry of Christ into Brussels" James Ensor depicts the people as fake because they are wearing masks. The most convicting part is that none of them are focused on Jesus! He has come back but people continue to go on with their lives as nothing happened. Ensor felt that people in his society were so self involved that they paid no attention to God or anyone else for that matter. Imagine how shocked critics and audiences would be after they were told this.

This painting strongly relates to (and please excuse the language) "Piss Christ." The work comes off as blasphemous, but in reality, Andres Serrano was trying to tell people that this is what we are doing to Christ. Serrano felt that people were stomping all over Christ and taking him for granted.
