When one thinks of France they usually immediately think of Eiffel Tower. This is because over time the tower has become the trademark of France, found on everything from keychains to t-shirts to post cards.It is now a main attraction that draws in more tourism.
The Eiffel Tower was designed and contracted by Compagnie des Etablissements Eiffel in 1889. However, it was not constructed without criticism. Many people protested the tower being built saying that it was not up to the standards of art for paris and that it was unfamiliar to anything previously done. Regardless, Gustave Eiffel went through with his plans defending his taste by comparing his project to that of the great pyramids. In a way he is right. It was the most modern and innovative construction of the time and as stated earlier attracts many travelers to see for themselves. This artistic architecture will forever be the mark of Paris. It reminds of several other constructions that are so engrained with their city that when you mention the cities name the architecture comes to mind. For instance, the famous bridge in London.
The last summer olympics were held in London and countless times through out the coverage of the games this bridge was the backdrop. These pieces serve as reference places and this was shown through the olympic coverage. You could have the television on mute and walk by and if you saw a reporter with this is in the background you would immediately know what was going on.
