Uberto Boccioni, States of Mind I –The Farewells (1911)

Trains were the big deal in 1911. They had been here a awhile, but the big deal is now you can get on a train and go so far that it is unknown to their minds. Where you could never do this before. But now, it became so widespread that people who would originally never have to say goodbye to each other, now have to do it a lot. The scary thing was, since this new concept, they may never actually see them again. This picture depicts the emotional state of those people. It is called "The Farewells" and I just love how, in this piece of art, it shows something that was going on in this time that had to do with the people as a whole, and it showed us an image of what their hearts felt like. The ache that this new invention had brought them. How something sad could come out of something great. Something during this time period that I think was like this art was Al Jolson’s music. His music of this time has so much similarity to this art. He was exciting, charismatic and bubbly. He got really into his music an worked really hard to convey his emotional and topics that his work had to deal with.
